Hands Only CPR Flash Mob Educates and Entertains Students and Fans

With the help of Manheim Central’s Baron and Sparky the Fire Dog, students and fans attending last week’s varsity basketball game at Manheim Central High School learned that saving a life isn’t just for EMS and emergency responders. Almost anyone can perform Hands Only CPR and the flash mob presentation was a fun and interactive way to demonstrate this.
More than 70% of sudden cardiac death occurs outside of the hospital and brain death begins within approximately 4 minutes of arrest. Studies show that if bystanders begin hands only CPR immediately upon witnessing someone collapse, that person’s chances of survival more than double. Hands Only CPR® is a method of performing CPR that consists of only chest compressions.  It is easy to learn and it takes away the concern of mouth to mouth resuscitation.
Northwest EMS offers FREE Hands Only CPR training on a monthly basis.  Additional information can also be obtained by visiting the American Heart Association’s website at www.heart.org.  If you are interested in having Northwest EMS present a similar demonstration to your group or event, please contact Lori Shenk, Community Outreach Manager, at our Manheim station, 717-665-2904.
